As a Board Certified Lactation Consultant, I am educated in infant feeding. Please realize that in third world countri...es an infant's only chance of survival is if the baby's mother breastfeeds him. Mothers in third world countries often do not have access to clean water to mix formula. Formula is an expensive and a less healthy choice for infant nutrition. Any formula will grow a baby but the evidence shows that there are associated risks with formula feeding. The evidence also shows that the immediate and long term health benefits of breastfeeding are evident for both baby and mother. In reality there are very few women who cannot breastfeed. No one is forcing anyone to breastfeed; it is simply the best choice a mother can make for herself and her baby.
